We recently received a request to machine a custom Expanding Collet to fit the ID of a plastic part. The only thing that was unusual about this, is that the part could not come into contact with the entire face that it was locating on. To achieve this, we simply tree panned a face groove into the front face of the collet. This eliminated the locating face of the part from touching the face of the expanding collet.
The ID of the part that the collet is expanding on, only has a depth of .500” with a 7° taper. It turned out that the customer was only removing about .010” from the OD, so he was able to do this without the part spinning on him.
